Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy developed to help people heal from the emotional distress caused by traumatic or disturbing life experiences. EMDR works by helping the brain reprocess stuck memories so they no longer feel as emotionally charged or intrusive. During an EMDR session, the therapist guides the client to briefly focus on aspects of a distressing memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation—such as side-to-side eye movements, sounds, or tapping—which helps the brain integrate and make sense of the experience. Over time, the painful memories become less triggering, and clients often report feeling calmer, more resilient, and better able to view past events from a new, healthier perspective.
